Lenovo's Surface competitor has Intel's new quad-core processors, LTE, and a 3D camera
The Verge

Lenovo Miix 520

Lenovo is making its Surface competitor a lot better this year. After slow iterating the Miix tablet from its Core M roots, the new Miix 520 will include Intel’s 8th generation quad-core i7 processor. It’s an addition that pushes its CPU performance past Microsoft’s new Surface Pro, alongside 8GB of RAM, 256GB of SSD storage, and a 12.2-inch 1920 x 1200 display. Lenovo also offers a USB-C port, the company’s own active pen support, and an optional 3D camera for capturing images.

Lenovo is even offering an LTE version of the Miix 520 before Microsoft has managed to ship its own Surface Pro with LTE. Like Microsoft’s Surface Pro, the Miix 520 includes a detachable keyboard, and an adjustable kickstand. Lenovo is using its watchband hinge that the company typically uses on its Yoga line of convertible laptops. If you use Cortana, Microsoft’s digital assistant, with your voice then the Miix 520 also has far-field microphones that can pick up your requests up to four meters away.

Apple rumored to unofficially repair or replace Hurricane damaged iPhone and iPad units
Phone Arena

So let's say that thanks to Hurricane Harvey your Apple iPhone or Apple iPad sustained serious water damage that basically destroyed one or both devices. Despite the IP67 certification rating on the iphone in wateriPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, Apple has made it clear that water damage is not covered by its warranty. So under normal circumstances, the flooding in Texas would normally lead to water logged iPhone units that would not be replaced by Apple, even if they are supposed to withstand a submersion to 3.3-feet for as long as 30-minutes.

But that doesn't mean that Apple isn't going out of its way to make life easier for those affected by the Hurricane. While not considered official policy, Apple is said to be offering free repairs to its devices that took on water and were damaged as a result. Apple is also believed to be offering free repairs to its devices that were damaged due to an impact that took place as a result of the Hurricane.

If your iPhone was in your pocket when flooding forced you to wade neck deep in water, or a tree branch crashed through your window and smashed into your iPhone which was laying on a desk, Apple just might replace your damaged iPhone or iPad (and even a Mac) out of the goodness of its heart. If you're iPhone, iPad or Mac was damaged due to the Hurricane, you need to trek down to your local Apple Store and tell them your sad story. Heck, you might even be able to get a freebie on a Hurricane damaged Apple Watch

Your iPhone and iPad will soon get these five useful new features
CNBC

Apple will release brand-new software for iPhones and iPads in the coming weeks.

It's called iOS 11 and it's the latest software from Apple that will also be available on Apple's new iPhones.

CNBC has been playing around with the new software for several weeks and, in anticipation of the release, decided to share a few of the best changes.

The major changes in iOS 11 will depend on what device you're using the software on. With iOS 11 on iPads, you'll have useful new multitasking features that allow you to drag and drop photos from one app to another (the web browser into an email, for example), or launch a new "slide over" window pane that lets you control apps such as messages while interacting with two other applications in split screen. That's just a taste.

  • Apple will launch iOS 11 in early September, and it'll be available for recent iPhones, not just new ones.
  • It will let you run apps side by side, exchange money with other users with Apple Pay and have augmented reality.
  • Siri will also be more accurate, and it'll have a "do not disturb" mode while you're driving.

Apple hasn't said when iOS 11 will launch for all iPhones and iPads just yet, but we will learn more during the company's iPhone 8 event Sept. 12.

Microsoft to hold Surface keynote in London next month
The Verge

Microsoft’s Surface chief will hold a keynote speech in London at the end of October. The software Panos Panaygiant is holding its annual Future Decoded event in London from October 31st to November 1st, and Microsoft revealed to The Verge today that Panos Panay will be speaking. Microsoft typically launches new Surface devices in October, and sources familiar with the company’s plans tell us to expect at least one new device at the event.

Microsoft previously promised a Surface Pro LTE version, and we’re expecting the company to unveil this hardware alongside a possible successor to the Surface Book or the Surface Hub. Microsoft is also planning to launch ARM-powered Windows laptops this year from a range of PC makers. It’s not clear whether Microsoft will create its own Surface with an ARM processor, but company says it’s still on track for partners to release devices with Qualcomm chips.

The Verge will be live from Microsoft’s Future Decoded event in London to bring you all the latest on Surface and Windows 10.

What new features are expected for the Surface Book 2?
Tech Advisor

Microsoft could launch a new Surface Book 2 in late 2017 or early 2018. We outline the latest rumours regarding the Surface Book 2 price, features, specifications and UK launch date.

The new Surface Book is expected to sport the same premium design we saw on the original, with a few major differences. For starters, Microsoft is said to have been working on improving the hinge. Surface book

Lots of users of the original complained that the detaching process was too complicated and not smooth enough, so the Surface Book 2 will likely offer solutions to this issue. It could provide a better way to detach the keyboard, or take a new direction by making the keyboard non-detachable, but the screen wholly reversible.

The new Surface Book will also likely come with a better screen, offering support for 4K resolution (3840 x 2160p), including a VP9 and HEVC 10-bit decode, which means better graphics will be available.

The new model is expected to feature cutting-edge specs. It is rumoured to have a lot more power thanks to new Kaby Lake processors, and support both USB-C and Thunderbolt 3.

The battery of the original Surface Book in tablet mode was a bit of a let-down, so Microsoft is expected to have spent time on improving this.

The Surface Book 2 will be preinstalled with Windows 10 Creators Update, which includes Cortana's speech recognition and a much improved video-playback feature. Given the Windows mixed-reality headsets we saw at CES, it's also possible we'll also see some support for VR.

When is the Surface Book 2 release date?

According to reports the Surface Book 2 will be unveiled at Microsoft’s two-day Future Decoded event on 31 October 2017.

If these predictions are correct, it should become available for purchase soon after, and we'd say definitely before the end of the year.

Microsoft Surface Pro 5 in the offing; key details leaked
Blasting News

Microsoft launched the successor to #Surface Pro 4 in May 2017. The company called it, “Surface Pro,” and claimed that it came equipped with all the possible modern-day features. According to a report by Tech Radar, some rumors claim that Microsoft is planning to introduce new Surface devices. They are expected to hold an event sometime towards the end of October (possibly #October 31) wherein they will take the wraps off Surface Pro 5. The device expected to compete with Apple MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

Intel’s latest Kaby Lake processor

Prolific leaker and Microsoft expert, Paul Thurrott took to Twitter last month, to reveal that Pro 5 will be powered by Intel’s latest seventh-generation Kaby Lake processor. The device will also include Surface Connect charger, which will reduce the charging speed in half. The Surface Pro is also speculated to come with a longer battery life. The laptop probably won’t consist of a USB Type-C port. It remains to be seen what data transfer method Microsoft will provide to its consumers.

What's so special about Microsoft Surface Studio? 3 important features to know
Computerworld

For a $2,999 price point, you might wonder — is the Microsoft Surface Studio desktop really worth it? I tested one recently and found myself being drawn to a few important features that made it worth the high price even compared to similar models from Dell and even Apple.Microsoft Surface Studio

1. Microsoft Surface Studio's incredibly high resolution

The high resolution of Microsoft Surface Studio was one of the surprises for me because I sometimes don’t like extremely high-resolution displays. They might be clear, but the color quality sometimes suffers. And in some cases, the extra resolution doesn’t really help with detail work in Photoshop and other apps because you don’t really notice the difference.

Microsoft Surface Studio uses a resolution of 4500 x 3000 pixels, and believe me, you notice. For photos, I was able to zoom in and make fine adjustments to pixels in ways I couldn’t do on any laptop or on my normal 2K resolution display. Even normal Microsoft Word documents looked better on the Studio’s display without any jagged text.

The iPhone X's processor is more powerful than the newest MacBook Pro
BGR

One of the many things that leaked before the iPhone X event this week was the A11 Bionic’s iPhome X A11 Bionicimpressive performance. We already knew we were looking at a six-core 10nm chip going into Apple’s press conference, because the first Geekbench scores were already spotted. Those numbers were far beyond our wildest dreams, showing performance gains unseen in any other smartphone. Those scores appear to be the real deal, which means the iPhone X’s brand new chip is now more powerful that the Intel chips powering some of Apple’s 2017 MacBook Pros.

Geekbench 4 single-core tests average around 4169, while multi-core have a 9836 average. But they can go up to 4274 and 10438, as found by MacRumors. That’s much better than the 10.5-inch iPad Pro (3887 and 9210 average scores), which isn’t surprising, considering that the 2017 iPads have A10X chips inside.

The highest-end dual-core 13-inch MacBook Pro scores 4592 and 9602 in Geekbench 4 tests. That means the iPhone X is slower in single-core tasks but speedier in multi-core tasks.

Sure, that doesn’t mean the A11 Bionic can do all the things a desktop CPU does. But, think about the numbers for a second. When has a mobile chip been able to match a desktop processor in raw benchmarks? What other smartphones can offer similar performance? Even with cheating enabled, no Android device can really touch these numbers, and it’ll be interesting to see whether Qualcomm’s next processor can get anywhere close to that.

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are also powered by the same A11 Bionic chipset.

Some apps won't work on iOS 11 — here's how to check which ones
The Verge

iOS 11 is almost here, and it’ll bring a host of new features to your iPhone or iPad. Also coming in the new update is the final switch for Apple from 32-bit apps to 64-bit apps, meaning that if an app you’ve been using hasn’t been updated for the more modern software architecture, it won’t work at all on iOS 11.

Apple has built a handy tool into iOS 11 that can show you all the apps on your device that won’t work with the coming update. To do that, navigate to Settings -> General -> About -> Applications on your iPhone, and you’ll get a list of the apps currently installed on your phone that haven’t been updated for iOS 11. (You can also access this on iOS 11, but at that point it will be too late.)

How to set up Windows Hello facial recognition on your laptop
CNET

You can log into your Window 10 laptop or tablet by looking at your webcam. Here's what you need Sign in optiomsand how to set it up.

The upcoming iPhone X might be Apple's first to let you unlock the device with your face, but Microsoft was there first with Windows Hello

Using your Windows 10 laptop or tablet's built-in webcam, Hello uses facial recognition to get you in and working in under two seconds. It also works with more than a dozen apps like DropBox, iHeartRadio and OneDrive, so you can skip typing in a password.

Unfortunately, not every webcam will work with Windows Hello. Your PC will need an infrared (IR) camera to use the feature, which are more common in new laptops and two-in-ones from the past couple years, including those from Dell, Lenovo and Asus. If you're not ready for a new PC, you can opt to buy a supported external webcam like Logitech's Brio 4K Pro or Razer's Stargazer. They're pricey, but cheaper than buying a new laptop just to get facial recognition.

If you're not entirely sure what, if any, Windows Hello support your computer has it's very easy to check. In the Cortana search bar at the lower left of your screen type "sign-in options" or simply click on the the microphone icon and ask Cortana for sign-in options.

iOS 11, First Take: The iPad gets to work, as Apple lays groundwork for the future
ZDNet

The arrival of iOS 11 has been treated almost as an afterthought, even though it brings a number of important new features to Apple's mobile platform.

Individual apps get new capabilities, of course, such as the new filters and effects in Camera and Photos. The oft-maligned Maps gets a few improvements, as do Apple Pay and the Do Not Disturb mode, which can now tell when you're driving and automatically block notifications and send an auto-reply message to people who are trying to contact you. And journalists will appreciate the new Markup option that allows you to immediately open and annotate screenshots while you're working.

iPad goes Pro

The improvements in iOS 11 go deeper than individual apps, though. The iPad, in particular, gets a lot of attention this time around, with Apple continuing to steer the device in the direction of hybrid laptop/tablet devices such as Microsoft's Surface Pro.

Microsoft tipped to launch new Surface Pro LTE variant soon; all you need to know
International Business Times

Microsoft is expected to unveil new Surface Pro LTE with eSIM at the upcoming 'Microsoft Future Decoded' event in London next month and release in the market in December.

Microsoft, earlier in the year, launched the Surface Pro laptop in Beijing and now, the Redmond-based technology major, as promised, is prepping to unveil new version of the hybrid computing system.

The company's official spokesperson during the "Microsoft Ignite 2017" event at Orlando, Florida confirmed (via Neowin) to the media personnel that an advanced version of Surface Pro with LTE connectivity feature, a first in Surface Pro series to date, is coming next month.

The device understood to be named as 'Surface Pro LTE' is said to be first showcased at the upcoming 'Microsoft Future Decoded' event, which will witness Panos Panay, corporate vice president, Microsoft Devices, make key note presentation. It is scheduled in London on October 31 and November 1. If things as plannced, it will hit stores on December 1.

In addition to normal SIM slot, Microsoft Surface Pro LTE is expected to come with integrated eSIM (electronic-SIM) similar to the Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE. With eSIM, users don't even have to subscribe to a new SIM, as they can share the same number of their smartphone via pairing.

Rumour has it that Microsoft Surface Pro LTE will be initially offered only in Intel Core i5 CPU-based series, meaning the device will come with either 4GB RAM+128GB storage or 8GB RAM+256GB internal storage configuration with Intel HD Graphics 620. It has to be noted that top-end model of the original Surface Pro comes in Core i7 CPU backed by 16GB RAM, 1TB storage and Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640

Microsoft Will Embrace USB Type-C with Docking Adapter for Surface
WinBuzzer

Back in May, Microsoft announced a USB Type-C Dongle for its Surface products. This has been a bone of controversy for Surface users as Microsoft did not have a USB Type-C port. Considering all major usb type c competitors have the connectivity, Microsoft has been slow to adapt. At Ignite 2017 today, the company said it will embrace the technology.

Speaking specifically about the USB Type-C dongle and said it is currently called the USB-C Docking Adapter. The peripheral will plug directly into the Surface Connect port and features a USB Type-C port on the other end.

Back when Microsoft announced the dongle in May, Surface head Panos Panay discussed Microsoft’s plans for USB Type-C:

“I love the technology in Type-C, I believe in Type-C. When Type-C is ready for our customers, to make it easy for them, we’ll be there.” Panos added, “If you love Type-C, it means you love dongles. We’re giving a dongle to people who love dongles.”

Information is still scarce, but it is probable that the adapter may only work with newer Surface devices. We are not sure which ones they will be, but we guess the Surface Pro, Surface Book, Surface Laptop, and maybe the Surface Pro 4.

Microsoft explained at Ignite it has avoided USB Type-C until now because there was too much fragmentation.

Here's When You Can Expect the New Microsoft Surface Pro LTE Laptop to Ship
Fortune

Microsoft's slick new Surface Pro LTE will be available December 1, according to several reports.

The thin laptop, which Microsoft (msft, +0.60%) announced last May at an event in Shanghai, will hit the store shelves well in time for the holidays, according to tech news site Neowin. An unnamed Microsoft spokesperson at the company's Ignite tech conference in Orlando this week confirmed the date, according to Neowin.

The difference between this version and the Surface Pros already out there is its use of wireless cellular networks for connectivity.
