Microsoft offers a closer look at the new Surface Pro with LTE Advanced

Earlier today, Microsoft hardware chief Panos Panay today officially announced the Surface Pro LTE device during his keynote at the Future Decoded conference in London. This new Surface Pro with LTE Advanced comes with a Cat 9 modem with support of 20 LTE bands and offering up to 450 mbps of cellular data speeds. Microsoft even claims that it is the fastest LTE-enabled laptop in its class. Microsoft today posted a new video offering a closer look at the LTE improvements included in this new Surface Pro device. For example, the Surface engineering team has included 7 LTE antennas on top of the device for great connectivity.

Under the Surface at Microsoft's Future Decoded

Peter Kyriacou heads up the program management team for all Surface devices. The secret to product perfection, he tells ZDNet, is to test lots of ideas, 'fail fast', and develop the good ones.

Five years ago, if you asked a creative professional what mobile devices they wanted, they'd probably choose Apple -- MacBook Pro and maybe an iPad too -- without hesitation. Now Microsoft's Surface products are serious contenders in this market. What do you see as the key factors driving this change?

Let me give you an example: when we worked on the Surface Pro 1 we had a Wacom pen and were running Photoshop. So we went to Adobe and said "We're making this device, and we want Photoshop to look great", and then we tweaked basic things with them, like how icons show up so that people can use a pen on a small device. Look how far we've come: now it's intuitive -- people pick up a Surface, log into Creative Suite or Office, and can use a pen super-easy. That's the trajectory we want to continue: how do we make our hardware a 'stage' for software? Ideally, we want the hardware to fade into the background, and the software to come to life -- and, more importantly, for the user to get into the flow.

The Dial is the latest example of integration between pen and touch: we've just announced further integration with Photoshop, which brings shortcuts to your non-dominant hand, so you can be in there painting with a brush and change the brush size or colour without having to break your flow to go to a menu.

Surface Pen malfunctions after installing Win10 Fall Creators Update

If you have a Surface Pen and installed Windows 10 Fall Creators Update,

you may be experiencing problems. It's not your pen.

If you have a Surface Pen, and you installed the latest upgrade to Windows 10 – the Fall Creators Update, version 1709 – you may be experiencing problems with your pen.

No, the battery doesn’t need replacing.

No, your pen isn’t wearing out.

Instead, it looks like there’s a bug in 1709 that makes “pinch to zoom” fail – or simply disables the pen as a whole.

Review: Microsoft Surface Pro (2017)

It’s been five years since Microsoft’s first debuted the Surface tablet. At the time, a slim slate that surface Procould also replace your laptop was a crazy idea. But the thinking around that concept—and the PC industry—has changed so much in the intervening years that Microsoft just calls its fifth Surface machine the “ultimate laptop.” No additional qualifiers needed.

In reality, it’s not quite the ultimate laptop, as Microsoft claims. The Surface can use some smoothing. But when it comes to 2-in-1 devices that can switch modes between drawing and typing, between work and play, the 2017 Surface Pro is just about as good as it gets.

One of the biggest changes to the Surface is impossible to see, and you can’t hear it either. The Pro is completely fanless. It was never a loud machine, but now it’s a silent one. The silence is all the more striking when you take a look under the hood. My test unit came with a 7th-generation Intel Core i5, 256GB of storage, 8GB RAM, and Windows 10 Pro. The 12.3-inch 2,736 x 1,824 pixel touchscreen looks stunning, rendering deep blacks and rich colors at a pixel density of 267 pixels per inch—one of the most vivid, beautiful laptop or tablet displays you’ll use. This configuration will run you about $1,460 with a keyboard, and I recommend it for most buyers.

Apple to launch new iPad without a home button in 2018
Digital Journal

Apple's working on a new iPad for 2018 that will leave out the home button in favour of Face ID. The device will better complement the iPhone X and offer substantially upgraded hardware. A redesigned Apple Pencil and new processor are among the changes.

Apple's not expected to radically change the design or size of the iPad. Instead, it'll focus on under-the-hood refinements that narrow the gap with the latest iPhones. The company's currently concentrating on an iPad of "similar size" to the current 10.5-inch Pro. It'll be the first to launch without a home button, a bold move that could bring about bigger changes in how the iPad's used.

Microsoft Black Friday deals: Save on Xbox, Surface and laptops

Microsoft hardware comes with steep discounts this Black Friday. Get a $190 Xbox One S, save up to $330 on a Surface bundle or choose from other sweet laptop deals at the Microsoft Store.

Itching for a new Xbox, Surface or, um, a Cortana speaker this holiday season? Microsoft has you covered.

Best known for its Windows software, the company makes its fair share of actual gear too, and a lot of it is going on sale at the Microsoft Store, where most deals begin at midnight on November 23. The company is also highlighting deals on Windows computers from a bunch of different makers.

Up to $329 off Surface Pro plus keyboard bundle

At the Microsoft Store you can get a high-end Surface Pro (256GB SSD, 8GB RAM) bundled with the black Surface Type cover for $1000 starting on November 3. That's a $329 savings. The less capacious version (128GB SSD, 4GB RAM) will cost $900, a $229 savings, and also includes the cover.

$199 off Surface Laptop plus HK Invoke Cortana speaker bundle

Buy a Surface Laptop (256GB SSD or higher) for $1,300 and you get a Harman Kardon Invoke speaker, a $199 value, for free.

And if you really like the Cortana-infused Invoke, you can get it for half price ($99).

Review: HP Spectre x2 (2017)
PC Authority

P’s glamourous 2-in-1 takes the fight to the Surface Pro but misses the punch in a handful of key areas.

The first HP Spectre x2 was a worthy Surface Pro rival: sleek and attractive, it also offered more for HP Spectre x2 (2017)your money thanks to its bundled keyboard and stylus. But it was held back by a collection of problems, including a poor quality screen and below-average speakers. Just like Microsoft, HP has updated its consumer 2-in-1 for 2017. So, has HP finally found the magic formula?

In terms of comparison to the Microsoft Surface Pro, for your cash it’s fairly evenly balanced, with the nearest equivalent Surface Pro costing $2,969 – that’s for the i7 model with a 512GB SSD, which matches the Spectre, although the Surface Pro has twice the RAM at 16GB. However, the Surface Pro doesn’t include a keyboard or stylus.

HP has also enhanced the design of the Spectre x2. Its dark grey aluminium body and copper-coloured trim not only look great but are a pleasure to use. Its kickstand provides up to 165-degrees of adjustment, making it easy to set up at just the right angle, while it’s both light and thin. That tablet portion weighs a mere 780g, rising to 1.15kg with the keyboard, and is only 8mm thick; that’s the same thickness as the Galaxy S8.

Samsung's Black Friday ad features deals on its laptops, Galaxy tablets

The electronics manufacturer has deals on its Chromebook Plus and Pro and Galaxy Book 2-in-1 that haven't been seen in other retailers Black Friday ads

What's interesting about Samsung's ad instead are the deals it's offering that its retail partners aren't listing. We haven't seen its Chromebook Plus and Chromebook Pro in other Black Friday ads, but they will be $100 cheaper at Samsung.com, falling to $349.99 and $449.99, respectively. Likewise, its pricier Galaxy tablets have largely not been promoted, but Samsung itself will have models such as the Tab S3 9.7-inch slate with bundled S Pen for $479.99 or the massive 18.4-inch Galaxy View with 1080p HD display for $379.99, both $120 off.

Also thus far exclusive to Samsung's site is a sale on its Galaxy Book convertible, a Surface Book competitor with Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, 128GB SSD, 12-inch screen, and bundled keyboard cover and S Pen for $949.99, or $180 off the current price. If you prefer a traditional laptop instead, the 13-inch Notebook 9 Pro with Core i5-7200U, 8GB of RAM, 128GB SSD, and 1080p display will be $749.99, and the 15-inch Notebook 9 Pro with the same processor and RAM but double the SSD capacity is $899.99, both $200 less than the current price.

Surface Book 2 review: Microsoft gets closer to the 'ultimate laptop'

Microsoft's Surface Book 2 is an even stronger MacBook Pro competitor than before. Mostly, that's Surface Book 2because there's finally a 15-inch model for people who need a bit more screen real estate. But the company has fixed most of the issues we had with last year's 13-inch model, as well. That's particularly true when it comes to the Surface Book 2's unique hinge, which lets you remove and flip around the display. It's the ideal follow up -- one that does everything its predecessor did well without any compromises. It's another strong entry for Microsoft, in a year where it already launched the excellent Surface Laptop and Surface Pro.

The Surface Book 2 is one of the most powerful and well-designed Windows laptops on the market. And thanks to its improved hinge, it doesn’t feel any different than a traditional notebook. It’s the best MacBook Pro competitor we’ve seen yet.

Microsoft Surface Book 2 review: beauty and brawn, but with limits
The Verge

Microsoft Surface pro 2

Visually, the Surface Book 2 looks identical to the first Surface Book. There’s a big — not MacBook Pro giant, but still big — trackpad, an awesome keyboard, and a sleek silver magnesium finish. The Surface Book was always an oversized 13.5-inch laptop that felt like it was edging closer to a 15-inch machine, and for that reason the larger size strangely feels familiar. Sure, it’s bigger in your lap, it’s heavier, and the screen is much larger than a typical ultrabook, but you’re also getting a lot more power under the hood.

Aside from the obvious screen size change (if you opt for the 15-inch model) and performance improvements, there’s very little change elsewhere. The Surface Book 2 is more of a refinement over the original, which means some of the original issues have been ironed out and some haven’t. Microsoft says the screen should detach quicker with the Surface Book 2 and there should be less wobble with the display, but I’ve found no meaningful difference in my use.

Surface Book 2 Day 4: It's a note taking monster!

Regular readers know that I am generally not overly impressed with Microsoft technology, but the Surface Book 2 may have just made my a convert.

The device appeared to be custom made for the job.  Placed into easel mode, with the screen Surface book 2reversed and folded over the keyboard, the slight angle made note taking a breeze. Writing with the Surface Pen on the screen felt even better than on paper, with the easy glide meaning my hand did not get tired. The pen easily kept up with my chicken scrawl, with no issues with lag at all. The standard thickness and size of the pen (vs a thin one which would fit into a silo) meant writing was always perfectly comfortable. The magnets to hold the pen was now perfectly placed on the right side of the device to easily stow the pen when not actively writing. The screen was large enough for split-screen multitasking, allowing me to keep up with Twitter and 6 other Chrome tabs without interfering with note-taking. Palm rejecting was perfect.

To preserve battery life I turned down brightness to its Darkest mode, and everything remained perfectly legible in fluorescent lighting. That move may have been unnecessary, however, as, after 7 hours of constant note taking, I ended the day with 56% battery life.  The Surface Book 2 was not even winded.

This is the best tablet deal in history

For an impossible $99.99, you can get a 10-inch HD tablet with oodles of bells and whistles. Game, set and match, Apple. Plus: a super-fast mobile charger.Amazon Fire Tablet

Let me start by saying I've always loved iPads. They're beautifully designed and a pleasure to use.

But the entry-level 9.7-inch model starts at $329, and that's just too expensive -- especially considering today's deal.

This week, as part of Amazon's Black Friday promotion, you can get the Fire HD 10 tablet for $99.99 shipped. That's $50 off the regular price, which was already an iPad-killing deal.

I actually don't write about tablets very much any more, because I suspect most folks who need one already have one. But I can't let this pass without discussion.

Amazon's original Fire HD 10 was pretty meh -- slow processor, low-resolution screen and kinda pricey given the specs. But just last month, the company introduced a new model: faster, sharper and cheaper. Suddenly, just as the Fire 7 and Fire HD 8 afforded killer alternatives to the iPad Mini, now the Fire HD 10 was the logical inexpensive alternative to the full-size iPad.

Now that it's on sale for $100, I stand by my claim: This is the best tablet deal in history. I'm not saying it's the very best tablet, merely that there's never been better value for the money.

All that and Alexa, too

The current-gen Fire HD 10 offers some notable hardware specs, including a 1,920x1,080-pixel 10.1-inch screen, 32GB of expandable storage, a quad-core processor and stereo speakers.

It also provides hands-free Alexa, meaning you can control it with your voice, just like an Echo. I'm not sure how valuable that really is in a tablet, but if you keep the HD 10 paired with a speaker, well, it's kind of like getting a bonus Echo Dot out of the deal.

Tablet Reviews: The Surface 2 and Amazon's Kindle Get Top Honors
Markets Insider

Do you want the best tablet on the market? If money is no object, go for the Microsoft Surface Book 2. That is the recommendation of David Milman, president of RESCUECOM, whose computer repair company headquartered in upstate New York repairs tens of thousands of computers annually.

Why? Not only is the Surface 2 a great tablet, it is also a top of the line laptop. "There is no question that the Surface 2 is Microsoft's most powerful laptop to date," says Milman.

It also has perhaps the most unique feature among tech devices of any kind: an uncoiling hinge that allows users to detach the 13 or 15 inch screen to use as a standalone tablet. While there may be tablets that are as large as the Surface 2, there is no tablet yet created that can dock to perform as a laptop, thus allowing for much more powerful and faster performance than it ever could without having the processing power of a laptop.

Microsoft's Surface Book 2 has a power problem

Microsoft’s Surface Book 2 has been well received by reviewers and critics for the most part, with the small exception of a little performance issue discovered by the Verge, and later substantiated by other reviewers who tested the performance of the Book.Surface Book 2

The central issue is that the Surface Book 2’s gaming-optimized mode — high-performance mode — is incapable of being sustained by the device’s battery for a prolonged period of time. While this would normally be fine, the Verge’s Tom Warren noticed that the device would continue draining even while the power supply was connected. The device’s power supply could not curtail the discharge, meaning that users would eventually use enough battery to force the Surface Book into Battery Saver mode, making it unsuitable for long-term gaming.

Now Microsoft has confirmed the problem exists by design. In a statement to the Verge, a Microsoft spokesperson said the following:

“Surface Book 2 was designed to deliver unmatched power and performance for anyone who needs a powerful machine to work and create, making it a great option for STEM professionals (designers, developers, engineers) The Surface Book 2 Power Mode Slider is provided as a means to give the user control over the range of performance and battery life. In some intense, prolonged gaming scenarios with Power Mode Slider set to ‘best performance’ the battery may discharge while connected to the power supply provided in-box with Surface Book 2. However, through power management design, the battery will never drain entirely, ensuring that users are able to keep working, creating or gaming.”

Microsoft notes that users will never, however, fully run completely out of battery life this way. However, this is done with negative results to the gaming aspect of the Surface Book 2.

Surface Book 2 vs. MacBook Pro: Which is the Better 15-Inch Portable Device?
Christian Post

Both laptops are about 13 and a half inch at their longest, and both weigh about four pounds, as Surface Book 2Digital Trends compared them side by side. The design of the Surface Book 2 that lets the display detach from the base to work as a tablet is miles ahead of Apple's traditional laptop design, though.

This gives the Surface Book 2 unparalleled flexibility, giving owners four modes to work with it. For its part, Apple has added the Touch Bar, which might come in handy for adding a few emojis, as PetaPixel points out.

The price of the highest-end Surface Book 2 variant still puts it $900 cheaper than a similar MacBook Pro 15. At $4,200 at the top-end, it's getting hard to justify going with Apple, when the excellent hybrid from Microsoft is right there.

For the past several months, the manufacturer picture has been stable: HP leads the way with a quarter of the market share. Dell is at 16 percent, Lenovo comes to third at under 13 percent while ASUS and Acer out of Taiwan round out the top five. In eighth place, Microsoft’s own devices take up 2.7 percent of the market.

In the first-party device category, Surface Pro 4 takes the cake at 39.7 percent while the Surface Pro 3 of 2014 is still holding on at 21.7 percent. The third-place Surface 3, at 10.4 percent, is not too far ahead of the Surface Pro (2017) at 9.2 percent — not too bad for replacement grades at the six-month mark. All we have to do is wait for LTE-equipped Surface Pro devices to show up on the list.
