Channels review: Turn your iPad or iPhone into a handheld TV

I’m a long-time cord cutter, but the increasingly chopped-up world of broadcast, cable, and exclusive programming available via websites and apps frustrated me enough that I bought an over-the-air (OTA) tuner so I could at least have a reliable source for major networks and PBS. By itself, the device just sits on the network; it has to be paired with useful software. That’s where Fancy Bits’ new Channels app for iOS ($15 on the iTunes Store) comes in, a sequel and complement to the developer’s Channels app for Apple TV, previously reviewed.

Channels Program Guide

Required hardware

The iOS app lets you watch and buffer live television on an iOS device with an A7 or newer processor, thus starting with the iPhone 5s, iPad Air, and iPad mini 2 (not the original), and both iPad Pro models. The software includes a no-fee continuously updated programming grid, so you can see current and upcoming shows as well as episode descriptions for most stations in most markets.

Channels requires a networked television tuner made by SiliconDust—any of its HDHomeRun series, which I previously reviewed. The HDHomeRun comes in three US models; the HDHomeRun Connect ($100 MSRP; $85 on Amazon) and the HDHomeRun Extend ($180 on Amazon) receive only OTA broadcasts; the HDHomeRun Prime ($123 on Amazon) can also take a CableCard (where available) to tune a subset of cable programming and only on some systems. All feature two simultaneously usable OTA tuners and require just a single coaxial cable hookup for an antenna. They cost from about $90 to $120. Non-US versions are available and Channels for iOS works in several other countries, including Canada and the UK.

Watch Apple advertise Microsoft's Surface Pro

Over the weekend, Apple released a new ad campaign for the iPad Pro. Perhaps directed at Windows users, the ad shows off iPad Pro features not available on traditional computers, and questions viewers by asking,”what’s a computer?”

Of course, this ad will not settle well with some Windows and Microsoft fans, so one Reddit user switched things up and created a video of Apple advertising Microsoft’s Surface Pro.

HP Elite X2 1012 review: A business-class 2-in-1 hybrid

HP's 11.6-inch Elite X2 1012 pays obvious homage to Microsoft's successful Surface Pro 4, and also competes with the recently reviewed Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet. With a starting price of £660 (ex. HP Elite X2 tabletVAT, or £792 inc. VAT), including a basic Travel Keyboard, the Elite X2 1012 is competitively priced: Microsoft's entry-level Core m3/4GB/128GB Surface Pro 4 costs £749 (inc. VAT) -- but that's without a Type Cover keyboard, which adds another £110 (inc. VAT). That sounds like good value for money, but does it deliver?

There are four models of the HP Elite X2 1012 available in the UK at the time of writing with the entry-level £660 (ex. VAT) model having a 900MHz-2.2GHz Intel Core m3-6Y30 processor and the most expensive £920 (ex. VAT) model a 1.1-2.7GHz Core m5-6Y54.

The less expensive models have 4GB of RAM, while high-end ones have 8GB. Internal storage runs to 128GB SSDs on the cheaper models and 256GB SSDs on the more expensive variants. Microsoft trumps HP by offering a wider range of Surface Pro 4 options, including up to 1TB of storage and Core i5/i7 processors.

Windows 10 Tip: Get the Anniversary Update Immediately

Should you bother? Yes, I think so. As I noted in my Windows 10 Anniversary Update review, this important update makes the best desktop operating system even better, with important new features that will benefit all users of this system. And while some will always report problems with such an update, the feedback I’ve received from readers so far has been overwhelmingly positive. That is, yes, I’ve received a few problem reports, but nothing endemic, where certain issues seem to be widespread. This was the most heavily-tested version of Windows ever created, and it looks like that transparency is paying off.

So. How can you get the Windows 10 Anniversary Update right now?

Windows Update. First, and most obviously, check Windows Update. If what you see is yet another Windows Defender definition update and not something called “Feature update to Windows 10, version 1607, it’s time to move on.

Use the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant. This is the simplest way to get the Windows 10 Anniversary Update right now: Just download and run the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant, a wizard-based app that can upgrade your Windows 10 (1511)-based PC as soon as its downloaded.

Download the ISO. The more technically-minded can download an ISO image of the full Windows 10 version 1607 Setup disc, which can be used to upgrade your existing Windows 10-based PC as well. Just open the ISO and run Setup.

Microsoft Surface 3 Alternative: The xTablet Flex 10

Mobile Demand The xTablet Flex 10

The availability of the Microsoft Surface 3 tablet is few and far between to say the least. Several distributors may have minimal stock of the devices but for the most part the Surface 3 has been sold out. Multiple unexpected large purchases by school districts have wiped out Microsoft's supply.

Powered by a quad-core processor, the xTablet Flex 10 comes equipped with 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, 2 color cameras, WiFi and Bluetooth. Weighing under 2 pounds, the device meets military standards for 4-foot drops to concrete.

In addition, MobileDemand adds on a back hand strap and briefcase handle for easy carrying of the tablet as well as a screen protector that is pre-applied by MobileDemand installation experts.

xTablet Flex 10 rugged tablets start at $695.

Three simple steps for keeping your Android smartphone or tablet secure

Despite there being well over a billion Android devices currently in use, when it comes to security it seems that most owners are left confused and bewildered.

Another day, another vulnerability with a cutesy name that afflicts almost a billion Android devices. I'll be honest with you've I've lost track of the number of Android vulnerabilities what have affected almost a billion devices.

This time, it is a bug called "Quadrooter" making the headlines. Quadrooter is a flaw affecting Android phones and tablets equipped with Qualcomm chips, that, when properly leveraged, can give a hacker full control of a device.

As usual, there's a patch on the way, but as anyone who has been involved with Android will know, that patch will only make it to a fraction of the 900 million or so affected devices. That's because handset makers and carriers are standing between Android owners and their updates, and are turning what should be a safe platform into a toxic hellstew of vulnerabilities.

So, how do you do your bit to reduce the Android toxic hellstew? It's actually quite straightforward:

Step #1

Buy a new Android device that's running Android 6.0 Marshmallow and that gets updated rapidly. By far the best route to take to get regular updates is to go for a Google Nexus device, as these devices are always the first to get patches and new releases of Android. Also, since these devices are unlocked, there's no carrier to get in the way.

Beyond that, it's best to pick a manufacturer that has promised to release monthly updates, such as LG or Samsung (but not Motorola).

Step #2

Apply the updates. Don't just let them pile up. Patches don't protect you unless they are downloaded and applied.

iGrab! Cheeky dolphin snatches tablet computer out of the hand of visitor at Seaworld
  • SeaWorld visitor was using her iPad to take pictures of a dolphin tank
  • One of the creatures swam over to her and grabbed the tablet off her
  • Dolphin then dragged it into the water before the woman caught it back

Taking pictures with your iPad can annoy bystanders, especially because you probably have a phone in your pocket with a perfectly good camera. I'm not sure why exactly it's so vexing, but even a dolphin seems to get that it is. In this video trending on Reddit, you can see a dolphin grab an iPad out of a woman's hand who is taking a picture of him or her. The dolphin then appears to laugh gleefully as the iPad splashes into the water.

'Stranger Things' Poster Began as Sketch Created With iPad Pro and Apple Pencil
Mac Rumors

Stranger Things

Ultimately, Lambert said he decided on the iPad Pro for the project because the tablet lets him "sketch in a very natural way," especially when used in conjunction with the Apple Pencil. He used the Apple device in the sketching process of the main poster art that has gained fame online in the weeks since Stranger Things launched in July, but Lambert has also been known to create impressive art on iPads over the years, particularly in a photorealistic representation of Morgan Freeman he created on an iPad Air in 2013.

"This was a very exciting project for me, as an artist that trained with oil paints, I really enjoyed the challenge of reproducing this traditional painting style using digital tools," Lambert told Mashable.

"I used the iPad Pro to do the preliminary composition ideas and the sketch that became the final Stranger Things poster. I chose to use the iPad Pro for the drawing stage of the poster because I find that I am able to sketch in a very natural way on the device using the Apple Pencil. The device in general is nice to hold for long periods of time, it is really portable and Procreate, the app that I used, has some really great Pencil brushes for drawing with."
Specifically, on the iPad Pro Lambert used the iOS app Procreate to assist in hisdrawing process, and then he transitioned to Photoshop on the Mac to upscale the image to a higher resolution so he could "paint small elements at the best possible resolution." During the coloring process, the artist used an Intuos Wacom tablet -- which connects to a Mac to act as a sketch pad -- so he could "focus on as much of the image" as he needed, without his hand obscuring a piece of the artwork like it does when using the iPad Pro/Apple Pencil combo.

Personal Tech|Off to College? Maybe These Devices Should Go Along
New York Times

When Vanessa Arreola, 18, starts her freshman year at Stanford University this fall, the top item on her back-to-school wishlist is a MacBook Pro.

She said she wouldn’t consider a tablet because she prefers a traditional keyboard. She relies on apps like Google Docs for documents and Google Slides for presentations, which are available through a web browser.

“A tablet is just like your cellphone, but bigger,” she said. “I don’t see a point of getting a tablet.”

But Claire Ashcroft, 19, who studies public health at Brigham Young University in Idaho, said the opposite. Half of her textbooks are digitized, and she uses apps like Microsoft Excel and Word — so her ideal school device would be a Windows machine with a touch screen, like a Microsoft Surface tablet.

The polarizing responses illustrate how back-to-school shopping for technology gadgets has become increasingly complex for parents. In the past, the dilemma for most students was whether to get a Windows PC or a Mac. Now, because of a proliferation of different computing forms with the rise of mobile devices, the debate has shifted toward whether to buy a computer or a tablet — and which operating system on top of that.

Then there are the different types of software and tools that students use, like flashcard apps or readers for digital textbooks, some of which are for mobile devices and others for computers.

To make back-to-school season easier, parents should have a conversation with their children about what devices and operating system to buy based on their student’s area of studies and the apps they use.

Reports: MacBook Pro Is Getting a Makeover

The long wait for a MacBook Pro refresh appears to be nearing an end, if the latest rumors are Applr rumorcorrect.

The new MacBook Pros expected to launch this fall will feature a Touch ID power button and a touch-sensitive OLED strip that will replace the physical function keys on the keyboard, both 9to5 Mac and Bloomberg reported this week.

The strip reportedly will bring up functions appropriate to the application that's in use. For example, it may display media playback controls when a user opens iTunes. It also might display editing commands, such as cut and paste, when a word processing program is running.

The strip may allow Apple to add new buttons through software updates rather than hardware refreshes.

"If you're a new user or a younger or more flexible and adaptable person, you'd think [the strip's] great," said Laura DiDio, principal analyst at ITIC.

"Media playback controls when iTunes is open... editing commands during word processing... I can see kids catching fire with this," she told TechNewsWorld.

However, "there's still that not-so-silent contingent of traditionalists out there who want to remain with the status quo," DiDio cautioned.

Still, "you have to constantly reinvent yourself as a vendor," she said.

The new MacBook Pros will be slightly thinner than current models, and have a smaller footprint, according to Bloomberg's report.

New Surface Special Edition NFL Type Covers Available to Kick Off the Season

We try lots of things out with Surface, and have mocked up a lot of different types of Type Covers for New Surface Special Edition NFL Type CoversSurface Pro. The response we got was exciting – on Twitter and from coaches and players. So we started to dig in on how we can do this for all the teams and NFL fans. It’s a natural place to explore given our relationship with the NFL and how Surface Pro is used on sidelines, in the coaches’ booth, and by many teams for playbooks etc. Oh, and the Surface team is FULL of NFL fans.

Report: Apple to add 10.5 inch iPad Pro next year

With new iPhones, Apple Watches and MacBook Pros expected in the coming months, you'd be forgiven for forgetting about the iPad.

There may be good reason. Respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities says Apple may be waiting on upgrading its tablet line until next year.

In his latest report, first spotted by MacRumors, Kuo says Apple plans to launch three new iPads next year. This will include a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro as well as a "low-cost" 9.7-inch iPad and 10.5-inch iPad Pro. The new 10.5-inch model is said to be better suited for education, a particular area of interest to Apple as it seeks to build out the iPad market.

Kuo, who studies Apple's supply chain, has a solid track record on gleaning the company's plans. Most recently, he accurately predicted the launch of the iPhone SE and was among the first to speculate that Apple will upgrade the MacBook Pro with a fingerprint sensor and touchscreen display bar, a rumor which picked up steam last week.

Both of the larger iPad Pros will run new Apple 10X processors, according to the report. Unlike the iPhone, which will reportedly see a major redesign next year to coincide with the smartphone's 10th anniversary, Kuo doesn't anticipate the iPad seeing a similar overhaul until 2018, where it may benefit from new features including a "flexible AMOLED" screen.

Apple's iPad Pro doesn't fare so well comparing itself to Surface Pro in latest video ad

Microsoft has published today a new ad called “What’s a computer? Just ask Cortana” that puts its Surface Pro 4 hybrid tablet against Apple’s iPad Pro. In the 30 seconds video, Siri has invited Cortana to a party to celebrate the fact that the iPad Pro now has a detachable keyboard. However, Cortana is definitely not impressed:

“I just got a keyboard, I’m a computer now,” says the proud Siri, though Cortana quickly reminds her that the Surface Pro 4 can do more: it has an Intel x86 processor, it runs the full Office apps, it also has a trackpad and external ports, and Apple’s iPad Pro can’t match that versatility.

Acer Switch Alpha 12 Review: A New Surface Competitor Emerges
Paste Magazine

Until recently, I haven’t been paying much attention to Acer, but maybe that was a mistake. Take, for instance, the Switch Alpha 12. Call it a hybrid, a 2-in-1, a convertible, or some other term entirely. It Acer switch tabletdoesn’t matter. It’s a 12 inch Windows 10 tablet with an attachable keyboard that can easily take the role of your main laptop or a mobile workstation.

Strictly speaking, Acer is marketing it as a 2-in-1 notebook, which is an apt description. There have been several attempts to make a multipurpose device that fulfills the purpose of portable tablet and fully-functioning laptop, but Microsoft’s own Surface is probably the best known. In direct comparison to the Surface, the Switch Alpha 12 makes a very favorable showing.

Acer’s 2-in-1 comes, essentially, in three distinct flavors—the low end model running an Intel Core i3 with 4GB RAM/128 GB SSD drive, the mid-grade Core i5 with 8GB RAM/256GB storage, and the powerhouse i7 version. We tested the i5 version (Model# SA5-271-52FG) running Windows 10 Home (Win10 Pro versions cost $100 more for some reason). The prices range from $599.99 for the low-end all the way up to $1099.99 for the i7 Windows 10 Pro model. Ours, a Costco-specific package, lists at $799.99 and included a special fine-tipped stylus and a 16GB Micro SD card.

Apple set to release new smaller iPad Pro next year, before 'radical' design changes in 2018
ThaiVisa News

Apple will release a new 10.5 inch iPad next year, according to reports.iPads

Apple expert and KGI securities analyst Ming-Chui Kuo says that Apple will add three new models to its iPad lineup in 2017, reports MacRumors.

The iPad is currently available in three sizes: 7.9 inch iPad Mini, the 9.7 inch iPad and 12.9 inch iPad Pro.

Kuo believes that Apple will try to address falling sales of the iPad by launching a new 10.5 inch device, which will be aimed at commercial and educational markets.

Kuo adds that he believes Apple will also add a more affordable 9.7 inch iPad, while the 12.9 inch iPad Pro will be updated.

However, the big news is that Kuo predicts a “revolutionary” iPad will be launched in 2018 that will include “radical changes” to its design.

“Revolutionary iPad model likely to be introduced in 2018F at the earliest, with radical changes in form factor design & user behavior on adoption of flexible AMOLED panel,” says Kuo.

Best Buy kicks off 50 hour sale, but are the deals worth it?

Best Buy is offering $280 back when you purchase a Surface Pro 4 and a Surface Type Cover together, which isn't too bad as that means you're essentially getting the Type Cover for free and saving $150 off the list price of the Surface Pro 4. Best Buy's other computing deals are a mish mash of accessories and hardware, though there are some stand outs, such as $150 off an HP x360 two-in-one laptop and $65 off a Corsair Strafe RGB MX gaming keyboard.

Best Buy's sale has some decent deals, but you may have to do a little digging to find something that makes breaking out your wallet worth it. There are also deals on TVs, wearables, and printers

A Layman's guide to choosing between the Surface Book, Surface Pro, or iPad Pro

A hot product that has surfaced recently are hybrid devices – that is, devices that can act as a tablet or as a laptop. Three of the most popular hybrid devices on the market (Surface Pro, Surface Book, iPad & Surface Pro tabletsand iPad Pro) are created by two of the biggest manufacturers in the industry, Microsoft and Apple. While there are numerous other hybrid devices on the market, these three are unquestionably the most recognizable among them.

I’m a student, and this year some of my classes are hosted online . I decided that I wanted to invest in a hybrid of my own, and I eventually narrowed it down to the Surface Book, Surface Pro, and the iPad Pro. However, making a final decision wasn’t easy. Sifting through countless articles and reviews and visiting demo stations several times ended up helping very little when it came time to actually purchase a device. Eventually, it had to be done, and I finally made a decision based on a very non-technical list of reasons why I should or shouldn’t buy a certain product.

So, overall, here’s what I deduced when it came to choosing between the three:

Apple’s iPad Pro works best if you:

  • Want a tablet with the option of using first-party keyboard.
  • Are invested or plan to invest in the Apple ecosystem.
  • Want a tablet with a good active digitizer for less money.
  • Value great battery life.
  • Prefer apps.

Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 works best if you:

  • Want equal parts tablet and laptop functionality.
  • Want included stylus.
  • Want the option to use a mouse.
  • Need USB ports.
  • Have a need for PC software, but not a wide array of apps.
  • Would like to have expandable storage.
  • Want options for a more powerful device.

Microsoft Surface Book works best if you:

  • Want more laptop functionality than tablet.
  • Want the option to use a mouse.
  • Need USB ports.
  • Would like to have expandable storage.
  • Want a hybrid that includes a keyboard and a stylus.
  • Need more power (including dedicated GPU in some models).
  • Decent battery life.

Surface Pro 4 Gets An Unbelievable $405 Discount Ahead Of Surface Pro 5 Release
The Bitbag

Sure, we have seen many discounts in the past, but all of them belonged to the Surface Pro 3 and not Pro 4. But now, interested buyers can grab the 128GB Surface Pro 4 for $649.99 ($350 off), while the 256GB variant is available for $894.99 ($405 off). The original price of the 128GB and 256GB models used to be $999.99 and $1,299.99, respectively.

The point to be noted however is that even though these devices are brand new they come in a customized box precisely because they were designated for corporate sales. But then, buyers will be offered 1-year free manufacturer warranty and free shipping service with the purchase of this device.

Both Surface Pro 4 models come with Windows 10 out of the box and they come powered by Intel’s Core i5 processor. While the 256GB variant comes backed by a solid 8GB of RAM, the 128GB model settles for 4GB.

Surface Pro 3 gets yet another firmware update; may finally fix battery draining issue
Windows Central

Microsoft has issued yet another firmware update for its Surface Pro 3 tablet. This is the third such firmware release inside of two months for the nearly two year old tablet, and this one may finally fix a fast battery drain issue that has affected some users.

An update is now available to correct this issue. This update corrects the logic in the firmware component that functions as the "fuel gauge" for the Surface Pro 3 battery, so that the actual battery capacity on devices with this particular part is accurately reported. This allows the Surface to once again leverage the maximum charge capacity of the battery.

Once this fix is applied to a Surface Pro 3, the reported full charge capacity will self-correct over the next several charge and discharge cycles. Surface Pro 3 devices that previously experienced the problem can now operate on battery power, and the issue won't occur on devices that haven't experienced the issue.

You can find more info on their updated FAQ page

Lenovo's two new tablets include a lower-cost Surface Pro rival

Lenovo's hoopla at IFA may be focusing on its creative-minded Yoga Book, but there are two Lenovo Miix 510new bread-and-butter tablets that are worth your attention, too. The 12.2-inch Miix 510 is a Surface Pro-alike for people who want a reasonably speedy 2-in-1 Windows tablet, but aren't willing to pay a premium. It sports a lower-resolution display than the Miix 700 (1,920 x 1,200) and is both heavier (1.9 pounds without the keyboard attached) and thicker (0.39 inches), but it promises to be more powerful. You can have up to a 6th-generation Core i7 processor inside rather than a Core M, and up to a 1TB SSD -- if it weren't for the maximum 8GB of RAM and 7.5 hours of battery life, the new Miix could easily go toe-to-toe with Microsoft's current flagship slate. There's even optional LTE data, which has been sorely missing on the Surface Pro line.

As it is, the pricing may make you forget the shortcomings. Lenovo hasn't outlined the entry-level specs, but the Miix 510 will start at $600 when it ships in October. That's inexpensive enough that you might just get a higher-end model and still undercut its Microsoft equivalent.

Oh, and Android fans? Lenovo hasn't forgotten about you. It's also unveiling the Yoga Tab 3 Plus, a 10.1-inch Android Marshmallow slate that slots neatly between the no-frills Yoga Tab 3 and its higher-end Pro counterpart.

Asus may have created the ultimate Surface Pro 4 clone

At this point, practically every major computer maker has cloned the Surface Pro, further validating ASUS Transformer 3 ProMicrosoft's 2-in-1 tablet-laptop vision.

Following in the footsteps of Acer, Samsung and Huawei, is Asus' own Surface Pro-like mobile computer called the Transformer 3 Pro.

The 8.35mm-thick Windows 10 tablet is made of durable magnesium alloy and features a 12.6-inch 3K-resolution display (2,880 x 1,920) with ultra-wide viewing angles.
