New Advances in the Hard Side of CRM
Destination CRM

Consider replacing your desktop PC with a Tablet PC.

Each year I get a new PC, not because there is anything wrong with my current unit, but because I want the latest and greatest box. Most upgrades just give me more of what I already have--more RAM, more disk, faster DVD--but not this time. Based on a colleague's suggestion, I purchased a pen-based LifeBook Tablet PC from Fujitsu

Having seen a previous generation of these units bomb in the early 90s, I was initially skeptical of what possible value Tablet PCs could provide over a standard PC. But after a few weeks of using the system, I am convinced that I will not only never buy another PC without this capability, I also believe that Tablet PCs should be the box of choice for any mobile sales rep.

So what do reps use virtually all the time during customer meetings? A spiral notebook to take notes on what happened on the call. And when they fill up that notebook, they put it on the shelf at the office, and start filling up another one. The Tablet PC changes all of that, with a killer app called Microsoft Office OneNote.

Microsoft plugs Tablet PC with free applications
Computerworld

As part of its efforts to promote Tablet PCs, Microsoft Corp. on Monday will release a free Experience Pack of pen-enabled applications for the mobile PCs.

Tablet PCs run Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system, a premium version of the Windows XP operating system. The mobile computers come with a special pen that allows users to write on the screen and control their PC.

The Experience Pack software bundle includes Ink Desktop, which lets users take notes using the Tablet PC pen directly on their desktop, Microsoft said in a statement. Other applications are Snipping Tool version 2, which lets users select and capture part of their screen, and Ink Art, a drawing application.

The Experience Pack also offers some entertainment: Ink Crossword comes with 12 puzzles and a new one can be downloaded daily; the Media Transfer tool simplifies copying media files from a desktop to the Tablet PC; and a new Energy Blue theme pack offers a skin for Windows Media Player that makes it easy to control with a pen.

Current Tablet PC users will be able to download the Experience Pack from Microsoft's Web site later on Monday. Also, PC vendors can install the software pack on new Tablet PCs, according to Microsoft.

These notebooks are built for business but like to play
Houston Chronicle

HP COMPAQ TC4200 TABLET PC — $2,099, Hewlett-Packard. Initially aimed solely at niche business markets, the Tablet PC design championed by Microsoft is now being pushed to consumers. This particular model is not part of HP's Pavilion consumer lineup, but the tweaks needed to make it appeal to home users are apparent.
The company's first Tablet PC, the tc1000 line, came in its native state without an attached keyboard, requiring users to affix a detachable one. This model, however, uses what's known as a convertible design — it looks like a standard notebook, but the screen swivels and folds down atop the keyboard to become a tablet. When you switch to the tablet design, the 12.1-inch display automatically converts from landscape to portrait orientation.

The tc4200 I tried came with a 1.86 GHz Pentium M processor, 512 MB of memory and a 60-GB hard drive. There is no built-in optical drive, but several external models — including a rewriteable DVD — are available as part of an optional docking station.

Students discuss GIS, fire fighting project
Coalfield Progress

The ultimate goal, Maggard says, is securing grant money to supply Tablet PCs to each fire department. These wireless computers would be fully GIS-integrated, Corder said.

Here's an example of how the gadgets could help. In the event of a fire at the Payless shopping center in Wise, fire fighters could use a Tablet PC to find the location of nearby fire hydrants and see the location of Glade Creek if the fire department needed to pump water.

Maggard and Corder, who both work in the county circuit court clerk's office, are seeking grant funds for equipment, software, consultants and travel for the so-called Wise County Interoperability Project.

The goal is providing mobile geographic information to fire fighters and other public safety officials, who would use the Tablet PCs to record the details of area fires. The system would link to the county's E-911 system and information organized by the clerk's office.

BStrong Tablet PC Notebook Screen Protectors
NotebookReview.com

There seems to be two dominant schools of thought when it comes to the subject of screen protectors on Tablet PC notebook:

  1. You believe that people are crazy if they do not use some form of protection on the most valuable part of their tablets.
  2. You believe that whomever engineered your tablet accounted for scribbling on the screen in the design and that screen protection is just a waste of money.

Depending on what device you are using, either opinion could be correct. Some tablets are more scratch resistant and more robust. But do you want to take a chance? With some screen protectors costing $50 or more, how do you decide?

How do you use and treat your Tablet? How often you use pen input and to what degree do you take care of your device. If you use your Tablet as a laptop more of the time, you are probably safe. There is no point in spending a lot of money on the screen protector if you do not need one. It all boils down to cost versus benefit

MSN Messenger 7 Final
Techtree.com

how do you get the handwriting feature working in MSN Messenger 7? Apparently, simply downloading and installing MSN Messenger 7 is not enough. The "Handwrite" tab is missing from under the text entry box. You need to download and install some additional software to get the handwriting "ink" for MSN Messenger 7.

That additional piece of software is Microsoft Journal Viewer 1.5. This Journal Viewer is exactly what the name suggests - it enables regular Windows users to view files that were created in Microsoft Windows Journal on a Tablet PC. But since it was designed for the Tablet PC, it includes the "ink" that the new MSN Messenger 7 requires to provide the handwriting feature, since the Tablet PC also has that feature. You can download Microsoft Journal Viewer here.

Tablets cure many mouse ailments
billingsgazette.com

Even the most svelte, hand-friendly computer mice are clunky. They require you to move your whole arm to get anything significant done and flex your wrist in ways that no other activities do. Over time, too much mousing can give you wrist pain, calluses on the base of your hand and a permanent urge to double-click.

You could always spend more time outdoors. But barring that, the solution may be much more elegant: a tablet.

If you like tablets, you might consider taking them to the next level when you hit the road by investing in a Tablet PC. They start at about $1,000 and include a glass screen designed to flip flat so you can write on it (using a pen that includes a wireless transmitter) like a notepad. In practice, they aren't quite as sensitive as the very best tablet accessories for standard PCs, but they are portable and they let you take that feeling on the road.

  • Participants considered convenient Internet access to be the greatest benefit of Mealtime. Household Internet usage increased in most pilot homes, especially in those with only one PC and/or whose members spent less than 12 hours online in an average week prior to testing Mealtime. The (Im)Perfect Notebook
PC Magazine

I like convertible notebooks where the screen swivels to become a tablet. So kudos to Acer, Fujitsu, HP, and Toshiba. I also like the fingerprint readers for passwords on the Fujitsu, IBM, and MPC machines. And, of course, I need a reliable notebook. In our reader surveys, IBM and Apple come out on top.

No one notebook has it all. Making a purchasing decision requires trade-offs. Larger screens tend to drive down battery life. Bigger batteries mean heavier machines. Optical drives add weight, and writable drives use a lot of battery. My ideal machine would be an extremely reliable 3-pound convertible with a big screen and keyboard, an optical drive, TPM, a fingerprint reader, lots of ports, and an 8-hour battery life. But I'm not holding my breath.

ASI Entertainment Launches Cockpit ''Pentastic'' Technology for Technology for G3CARS
Business Wire

G3CARS is ASiQ's world's first electronic Aircraft Log Book system incorporating TabletPC and 3G communication technology.

Ron Chapman, ASI's CEO, stated, "Anyone who has used a PDA handwriting program or tried to type a message on a cellphone knows how frustrating it can be. Working with pilots, we found that the existing TabletPC handwriting system was not ideally suited for the aviation cockpit environment. With the advent of Microsoft's .NET (dot net) development platform, ASiQ was able to create for its G3CARS system a proprietary intelligent handwriting technology specially designed for aviation. While Pentastic will be invaluable for filling out the multitude of cockpit forms, it also means that the pilot will now have the ability to write emails on the Tablet PC, rather than trying to use the embedded keyboard."

Jack-of-Many-Trades Gadgets
PC World

It's not thin and quick, but the Gateway M275 laptop running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition offers great versatility. Its coolest feature is a 14.1-inch swivel screen, which can rotate 180 degrees and cover the keyboard to turn the notebook into a Tablet PC. In this configuration, with the digitizer pen as a mouse, I used the M275 as a personal DVD player, a gaming PC, a note pad, and a TV. While watching a baseball game on it, I was able to swivel the screen 180 degrees to let someone sitting opposite me take a look at the action.

In my tests, the eight-cell lithium-ion battery ran for 2.5 hours on a single charge, which is somewhat less than the 4 hours Gateway claims it should last. The machine felt heavy as notebooks go--the touch screen's protective glass covering probably contributed to its weight--but it could be a good home PC replacement. Configured with Intel's 1.8-GHz Pentium M 745, a 60GB hard drive, 512MB DDR SDRAM, a memory card reader, an integrated
