April 12, 2005 Tablets cure many mouse ailments Even the most svelte, hand-friendly computer mice are clunky. They require you to move your whole arm to get anything significant done and flex your wrist in ways that no other activities do. Over time, too much mousing can give you wrist pain, calluses on the base of your hand and a permanent urge to double-click. You could always spend more time outdoors. But barring that, the solution may be much more elegant: a tablet. If you like tablets, you might consider taking them to the next level when you hit the road by investing in a Tablet PC. They start at about $1,000 and include a glass screen designed to flip flat so you can write on it (using a pen that includes a wireless transmitter) like a notepad. In practice, they aren't quite as sensitive as the very best tablet accessories for standard PCs, but they are portable and they let you take that feeling on the road.

The (Im)Perfect Notebook I like convertible notebooks where the screen swivels to become a tablet. So kudos to Acer, Fujitsu, HP, and Toshiba. I also like the fingerprint readers for passwords on the Fujitsu, IBM, and MPC machines. And, of course, I need a reliable notebook. In our reader surveys, IBM and Apple come out on top. No one notebook has it all. Making a purchasing decision requires trade-offs. Larger screens tend to drive down battery life. Bigger batteries mean heavier machines. Optical drives add weight, and writable drives use a lot of battery. My ideal machine would be an extremely reliable 3-pound convertible with a big screen and keyboard, an optical drive, TPM, a fingerprint reader, lots of ports, and an 8-hour battery life. But I'm not holding my breath.

Jack-of-Many-Trades Gadgets It's not thin and quick, but the Gateway M275 laptop running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition offers great versatility. Its coolest feature is a 14.1-inch swivel screen, which can rotate 180 degrees and cover the keyboard to turn the notebook into a Tablet PC. In this configuration, with the digitizer pen as a mouse, I used the M275 as a personal DVD player, a gaming PC, a note pad, and a TV. While watching a baseball game on it, I was able to swivel the screen 180 degrees to let someone sitting opposite me take a look at the action. In my tests, the eight-cell lithium-ion battery ran for 2.5 hours on a single charge, which is somewhat less than the 4 hours Gateway claims it should last. The machine felt heavy as notebooks go--the touch screen's protective glass covering probably contributed to its weight--but it could be a good home PC replacement.
